A Giant in Motion

Standing before a freshly uprooted plane tree at the nursery, its sheer size becomes truly tangible: 12 tons of living power, ready for relocation to a new park. The transport? A colossal undertaking. Moving such trees requires heavy-duty transport and even road closures.

Plane Trees: Survivors for Our Changing Climate

Plane trees are remarkable survivors. They withstand heat and drought like few others, making them perfect candidates for our changing climate. In a park we’re designing, three of these giants will be planted as grand entrance features. While their autumn foliage may be modest, their lush green canopies in summer more than make up for it. Whenever I see them, I’m instantly reminded of France: its dreamy avenues and the films of François Truffaut.

The Power of the Hybrid

Interestingly, this plane tree is a hybrid—a “bastard” born of Spanish and Chinese plane trees. This combination has proven to be particularly resilient. It will take a few more days before its crown is carefully wrapped and the tree is fully prepared for transport.
