Made of Yew

In an impressive tree nursery in Belgium, a monumental sculpture crafted from native yew trees (Taxus baccata) has taken shape after years of careful cultivation. Known as the “Bubble,” this living masterpiece consists of 40 to 60 individual plants meticulously shaped into a flawless, unified form. With a radius of 50 meters, the sculpture owes its harmonious appearance to consistent care and precise pruning.

Art on the Outside, Wonder Within

What appears monumental and perfect from the outside conceals an entirely different world within. Inside, it is cool, dark, and tranquil – almost like a natural cave. These green sanctuaries are not only visually striking but also offer diverse uses. Children delight in playing within these “plant caves,” while on hot summer days, they provide a pleasantly shaded retreat.

Why Yew Trees?

Yew trees are perfectly suited for such projects. Their resilience, adaptability, and ability to maintain shape even after extensive pruning make them ideal for artistic garden designs. The common European yew, with dedicated care, transforms into an extraordinary evergreen element that is both visually captivating and highly functional. Additionally, these structures offer ideal nesting opportunities for songbirds, adding ecological value to their aesthetic appeal.

The Path to Perfection

Every plant sculpture begins with a precise plan and significant effort. Each individual plant is carefully numbered to ensure it is placed exactly in its designated spot during transplantation. Inside the sculpture, irrigation rings support optimal growth, and mulch protects the soil and preserves its moisture. Following transplantation, a final corrective pruning perfects the form. This meticulous interplay of planning, maintenance, and technical precision turns “Bubbles” into living works of art.
