Hedges have a certain magic about them. They not only structure our gardens but also provide protection, privacy, and a stage for the changing seasons. Today, I want to shine a spotlight on a special star among hedge plants: the beech tree. And no, this is not the often-confused copper beech, but the lush green beech, which enchants us not only in summer but also in winter – though only if pruned.
The beech tree possesses an extraordinary talent: when pruned as a hedge, it retains its leaves throughout the winter. The foliage turns coppery in autumn and remains attached until spring. This creates a natural privacy screen that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. This unique feature makes the beech an ideal choice for those who want to add a warm, vibrant accent to their gardens even in the barren winter months.
Beyond its aesthetic and functional qualities, the beech hedge holds significant ecological value. Its dense structure provides a safe haven for numerous bird species. In my own beech hedge, I’ve discovered three blackbird nests, two robin nests, and two wren nests – and those are just the ones I’ve noticed! This hedge is a small paradise for birds and contributes to enhancing biodiversity in our gardens. Another reason to appreciate it.
What fascinates me most about this hedge is how easy it is to maintain. A single annual pruning keeps it looking its best, with a minor touch-up in September if needed. No complicated care, no surprises. Additionally, this hedge can grow to an impressive height of up to four meters over decades, as I recently used it in a construction project.
One particularly interesting project involved using these hedges for a construction site. The client enjoyed a stunning view on one side – and a less appealing one on the other, namely the neighboring property. The solution? Beech hedges planted densely side by side. Instantly, the unsightly view was gone, and the residents could fully enjoy their garden. Planting such large hedges is an investment – not only financially but also in time. It’s remarkable to think that a nursery invests 20 to 30 years to cultivate such high-quality plants.
It is truly an art to nurture these plants for years, providing fertilizer, pruning, and watering until they achieve their perfect form. The final steps – transporting and planting – are the culmination of a long journey. For me, this is always a moment of reverence.
To me, the beech hedge symbolizes how patient care and thoughtful planning can create something truly remarkable. It is more than just a hedge; it is a piece of living architecture that enriches our daily lives. Whether as a privacy screen, part of a larger landscape concept, or simply as a stunning feature in the garden, it is always a wise choice. And with its ecological contribution as a haven for birds and other wildlife, it becomes an invaluable asset to our environment.
