A Touch of Florence in Mallorca

Here we are in the midst of a stunning hotel complex in Mallorca, set to be completed this year. The Mediterranean sun, the salty breeze, and the rugged yet characterful landscape create the perfect setting for a small but special star in the gardening world: the iris.

I’ve brought an ancient rarity from Florence—straight from a Medici garden. It’s a true highlight because in the Mediterranean, it blooms twice a year! A true treasure that I pre-cultivated at home and am now planting here in the Mediterranean climate. But why this particular plant? And how can you turn a single iris into a magnificent clump? Let me share the secret.

Why the Iris is Perfect for the Mediterranean

Mediterranean gardens pose unique challenges for plants. Summers are long, hot, and dry, and water is often scarce. This is where the iris shines: it handles drought brilliantly. Its roots store enough moisture to withstand extended dry periods, making it an ideal companion for this region. But that’s not all: its delicate, colorful, and fragrant blooms bring elegance and lightness to any garden.

Step by Step: How to Divide and Replant an Iris

The beauty of the iris lies in its remarkable ability to multiply. With just a few simple steps, one plant can quickly become an entire group—perfect for creating striking clumps. Here’s how to do it:

     1.    Dividing the Plant:
The first step is wonderfully simple: gently break the plant into two, three, or more equal pieces. I prefer to use a fork to protect the delicate roots when digging them out. Then, break the pieces apart and cut them cleanly.

     2.    Preparing the Roots:
It’s essential to trim the lower roots cleanly. This encourages the plant to develop strong new roots and ensures healthy growth.

     3.    Preparing the Soil:
The soil here in Mallorca is very sticky and clay-like. We use sharp gravel to create proper drainage. Good drainage is crucial because the plant doesn’t tolerate waterlogging. If your soil isn’t permeable enough, you can improve it by adding some gravel—this is absolutely vital.

    4.    Planting:
Now comes the easy part: simply place the divided plants into the prepared soil, positioning the leaf stems outward. Gently press them into place and water well—that’s it!

The Result: Stunning Clumps Without Effort

What may initially seem modest will, over time, transform into impressive, ground-covering clumps. These are not only beautiful but also robust and easy to care for. This combination makes the iris one of my favorite companions for Mediterranean garden designs. And the best part? With its twice-yearly blooms, it always brings little moments of joy.
